Getting to Know Volleyball Coach Richter

Amanda ColeSaints Blog

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am married to my husband, Doyle, and we have 3 children (Ashley, Andrew, & Katelyn) who all went through SLS from Preschool – 8th grade.  I have been teaching music here at SLS for 20 years and have coached volleyball and cheerleading for the last several years.  In my free time, I love singing, sewing, and knitting & crocheting.

Did you compete in volleyball in school?

Yes, I started playing volleyball with my dad and going to camps when I was in 4th grade and played on my school’s junior high and high school teams.

How long have you coached? What sports have you coached over the years?

I have coached or been assistant coach of the SLS volleyball team for about 10 years and I have coached the cheerleading squad here for about 7 years.

Tell us about your experiences as a coach.

I have learned much patience in working with young teenage girls as they learn a new sport like volleyball or learn to step out of their comfort zone when cheering.  But to see the smiles on their faces when they accomplish a certain task in that sport is well worth the stress.  And seeing their skills improve as the season goes on or when the next season starts brings me so much joy and pride as a coach.

What do you enjoy about coaching?

I love working with the kids to improve their skills in the sport that I love.  And seeing the pride and joy on their faces when they accomplish a skill that they didn’t think they could do brings so much joy to me that I feel like I am just beaming with pride!

In your opinion, what makes an effective athlete?

Having respect for your coach and each of your teammates and playing to the best of your ability.  Using the skill and talent that God gave them to glorify Him with their attitudes and actions.

How do you integrate the Christian faith into your athletic program?

I try to strongly encourage the athletes to use the talents that God has given them to the best of their ability and to keep a positive attitude that would glorify Him.  I also try to strongly encourage them to show God’s love to their own teammates and to the other team through good sportsmanship.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about volleyball at SLS?

Not really.  Just GO SAINTS!!!
